GTS Station - Máyápur

Mayapur Map

Location 22.4476N/88.1202E (estimated)
Visited 11th January 2017
Series East Coast Series
Sol 125K Sheet 79B SW
Description Appears from map evidence to have stood on an embankment on the east side of the Hooghly River. Despite an intensive search locally, and local enquiry, no remains of the station were located. The station was most probably a semaphore-type tower as it formed part of the Kolkata and Diamond Harbour semaphore link which was re-used by the GTS for trigonometrical purposes.

Historical account not mentioned in GTS Synopsis Volume XIII in the detailed descriptions of stations but Máyápur is listed among the coordinates of all stations of the East Coast series as ‘on a semaphore so called, 42 feet above ground’ (page 95) and given the coordinates of 88˚ 11’ 52.14’’ N and 22˚ 26’ 12.23’’.

Condition

Presumed destroyed, perhaps through erosion of banks of Hooghly River.
